Is Trump about to mobilise 100,000 National Guards to round up immigrants?

According to AP news he is

AP News has apparently heard of a memo circulating around the Dept of Homeland Security saying that Trump’s administration is looking at utilising the National Guard to herd up any illegal immigrants.

The memo in question details;

  • Calls for the unprecedented militarisation of immigration enforcement as far north as Portland, Oregon, and as far east as New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Four states that border on Mexico are included in the proposal
  • Troops would be authorised “to perform the functions of an immigration officer in relation to the investigation, apprehension and detention of aliens in the United States.”

There’s been plenty of recent comparisons between Trump and Hitler doing the rounds and this story won’t do anything to quieten that noise.

Here is the full AP story.screenshot-2017-02-17-at-15-54-04

Trump gets his pants pulled down over New York Times tweet

Trump slated the New York Times again but didn’t get his facts straight

The New York Times posted a story after Trump’s phone conversation with the Chinese Premier Xi and in it they referred to the fact that previously, Trump had not spoken to Xi since Nov 14th. Trump hasn’t read it properly and tweeted that the NYT is doing fake news, citing that he spoke to Xi yesterday.

Trump mentions taxes and financial markets pop the champagne corks – What could go wrong?

In a meeting with Airline officials Trumps talks taxes

During a meeting with airline officials Trump spoke about taxes.

“TRUMP TO ANNOUNCE “SOMETHING” ON TAXES IN 2-3 WEEKS”

…cried the news wires. Markets then went potty.

The currency pair USDJPY (a proxy for the US economy) jumped nearly 100 points from 112.25 to 113.20. US government bonds jumped in yields (another proxy for a bullish view of the economy), US stock markets hit new record highs.

Any leader talking tax cuts gets financial markets in a tizzy. One line from Trump and the financial world now expects boom times for the US economy.

How wrong might they be?

What was lost among the headlines was another comment on taxes, this time referring directly to the airline industry:

“I don’t like aviation fees and taxes” said Trump

That’s hardly a screaming message that tax regimes across America are soon to be targeted by Trump. The original comment might also have just been in the context of talking about airlines.

Anyway, taxes are on Trump’s agenda but he’ll need to do more than put his name on an executive order. This is one big area that Congress will be very much involved in.

I guess we’ll have to wait “2-3 weeks” to find out 😉
